Nebraska Hospital Uncovers $1.5M in Revenue Through Documentation Training

Proper documentation training for cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons uncovered $1.5 million in additional revenue at BryanLGH Heart Institute in Lincoln, Neb., according to a Cardiovascular Business report.

According to the report, Clyde Meckel, MD, and colleagues set out to train cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons and other medical staff members on documentation requirements and deficiencies. The facility hired two consultants to work on-site for 30 days over a nine month period, during which time the consultants reviewed charts for accuracy and provided group training sessions on documentation guidelines.

The staff found that with proper documentation, the facility could realize $1.5 million in actual additional revenue annually. The researchers noted that as coding and documentation requirements change, facilities must retrain staff to improve documentation efforts and capture 100 percent of procedures performed.
