Molina Healthcare investigates possible data breach

Molina Healthcare is looking into a potential data breach that may have impacted patient medical information, according to Kaiser Health News. The payer shut down its online patient portal until it fully assess the situation.

A cybersecurity official, Brian Krebs, said he notified Molina about the potential breach earlier in May. The company told the expert it was aware of the security vulnerability. A Molina members provided Mr. Krebs an anonymous tip in April about the breach. The member noted an issue when he tried to access his medical claim online and found he could view other patients' claims by changing a single number in the website address.

This member then showed Mr. Krebs his medical records screenshots and how changing this figure could show other patients' information.

Mr. Krebs told KHN, the company has been "exposing countless patient medical claims to the entire internet without requiring any authentication." KHN reports Molina is unsure how many patient records may have been breached and how long they were exposed.

In a statement, Molina said, "We are in the process of conducting an internal investigation to determine the impact, if any, to our customers’ information and will provide any applicable notifications to customers and/or regulatory authorities."
