Mississippi Plans Health Insurance Exchange While Fighting Federal Reform Law

Mississippi is moving forward with implementation of a health insurance exchange even as the state fights the federal healthcare reform law, according to a Kaiser Health News report.

Unlike other heavily Republican states, which are waiting for the Supreme Court's decision on healthcare reform before they plan health insurance exchanges, Mississippi is making progress toward setting up a health insurance exchange by the 2014 deadline.

An exchange had the outright support of former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, even before the healthcare reform law was passed. According to the report, a bill written by Sen. Buck Clarke and passed into law in 2009 has laid the groundwork for the exchange.

According to the report, Mississippi lawmakers prioritized designing their own exchange rather than letting the federal government step in.
