Group Insurance Commission lowers copays to drive patients to ASCs: 3 details

The Group Insurance Commission in Massachusetts previewed a plan to lower the copay for patients undergoing certain procedures at an ASC in 2020, according to the Worcester Telegram & Gazette.

The key details to know:

1. The copay for patients with GIC plans for eye and gastrointestinal surgery would decrease from $250 to $150 if they undergo the surgery at an ASC over a hospital outpatient department.

2. The plan’s purpose is to incentivize patients to seek lower-cost care in ASCs over more expensive hospital treatment.

3. If the plan is approved, it will go into effect in 2020.
