Georgia insurance companies will soon have to provide more detailed, customer-friendly explanations if they plan to raise premiums by more than 10 percent, according to a Health Leaders Media report.

Georgia Insurance Commissioner Ralph Hudgens has notified state insurers of the change, which will be implemented next month. The new requirement applies to individual and small group plans.

While the change does not guarantee that premium increases will slow down, it will improve transparency around rate increases. Georgia insurers have frequently increased premiums by more than 10 percent in recent years for individuals, with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia announcing hikes of more than 20 percent.
