1. Time. By the end of the month, have your impact assessments completed and begin monitoring vendor preparation. Establish checkpoints to stay on schedule.
2. Budget. Carefully scrutinize everything that needs a change or upgrade to prepare for the immense cost of implementation. Budgeting ahead of time will be important for a successful transition.
3. Coordination. Collaborate with clearinghouses now to be sure they will be ready to process your claims as of Oct. 1, 2014.
4. Training. A smaller practice may not have a dedicated team of coders, so administrators or other staff members may need to train for ICD-10 to help pick up slack.
5. Productivity. Practices should expect some initial drop in productivity, but comprehensive planning and testing should mitigate some risk.
