Electronic Health Records May Lead to Medicare Overbilling

At study from the Center for Public Integrity reports electronic health records could potentially lead to Medicare overbilling, according to Health Beat.

Physicians can select escalating payment codes for Medicare billing, and the CPI study found many healthcare providers are choosing higher-paying treatment codes and upcoding.

The Department of Health and Human Services said it will be looking into how EHR may be affecting upcoding, though they do not have a system to monitor the different types of software being used nationwide.

However, some physicians feel EHR systems will allow them to correct billing practices.
