Connecticut to Set Up Board to Develop Health Insurance Exchange

Connecticut is planning to select a board and staff members to oversee the development of a state health insurance exchange, which would allow individuals and small businesses to comparison shop for health insurance starting in 2014, according to a Health Leaders Media report.

The exchange is mandated through healthcare reform. If states do not set up health insurance exchanges on their own by 2014, the federal government will step in and set them up. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has developed a framework for setting up the exchanges.

Connecticut is one of 49 states and Washington, D.C., to accept the grants offered by the federal government to plan and develop exchanges. The state received $996,848 for one year of planning in September and is applying for another $6.6 million for the second stage of development.
