To avoid the risk of not getting paid, providers may want to collect from the patient up front and offer to submit the claims for reimbursement on the patient’s behalf.
Providers need to be clear with patients that receiving care without a referral from anyone other than a primary care physician may result in an insurance denial. Practices need not be financially responsible for such denials.
A clear, concise policy of financial responsibility can avoid any confusion for the patient and lack of reimbursement for the practice.
