CMS to add 5k+ codes to ICD-10 — 5 takeaways

CMS is adding nearly 5,500 codes to ICD-10, according to Healthcare It News.

Here are five takeaways:

1. The additions include 1,900 diagnosis codes and 3,651 hospital inpatient procedure codes.

2. CMS will add the codes to the ICD-10 diagnostic library on Oct. 1, 2016.

3. Ninety-seven percent of the 3,651 new hospital inpatient procedure codes will update the cardiovascular and lower joint body systems.

4. CMS will add new codes for a face transplant, hand transplant and donor organ perfusion.

5. CMS is adding the codes due to a freeze on various updates prior to the ICD-10 original launch on Oct. 1, 2015.
