CareFirst BCBS seeking 50%+ premium hike following million-dollar losses: 4 things to know

CareFirst Blue Cross Blue Shield, one of Maryland’s leading ACA payers, is requesting a premium rate increase surpassing 50 percent in the state, according to the Washington Post.

Here are four things to know:

1. The payer is also seeking a 35 percent hike in northern Virginia and a 29 percent increase in Washington, D.C.

2. CareFirst has lost $600 million on the ACA exchanges in the last four years.

3. CareFirst Chief Executive Chet Burrell told the Post the company is experiencing sicker beneficiaries without an influx of healthy consumers to offset these costs.

4. Mr. Burrell said the company aims to stay in the exchanges and will continue to try and sell plans.
