Audit uncovers 6 top medical billing mistakes 

While the precise rate of industry-wide billing errors is unknown, claims management software company Mitchell International discovered some type of billing mistake in 35 percent of the workers’ compensation bills it audited.

Here are the most common types of issues uncovered in the analyzed bills, and how frequently they occurred.

  • Edits: 44 percent
  • CCI issues (inappropriate coding): 24 percent
  • Unbundling (billing for multiple procedures covered by one comprehensive code): 19 percent
  • Medical: 7 percent
  • Other: 4 percent
  • Medically unlikely edits errors: 2 percent
