Medscape surveyed 20,000-plus physicians across 29 specialties for the report.

Here are 6 statistics on physician payment model participation.

  • 73 percent of providers accepted insurance
  • 38 percent of physicians used fee-for-service models
  • 27 percent of providers participated in accountable care organizations
  • 13 percent provided direct primary care
  • 5 percent were cash-only practices
  • 2 percent were concierge practices

Medscape said although ACO participation rose in 2018, evidence suggests the industry isn’t interested in the model.
