Here are four points:

1. Mr. Swedish replaces George A Schaefer, Jr., who will now serve as the company’s independent lead director.

2. Mr. Swedish joined Anthem in March 2013, and under his leadership, the company has outperformed financial expectations for nine quarters.

3. He has also headed the effort to complete an agreement to acquire Cigna, which is expected to close in the second half of 2016.

4. “This additional appointment serves to recognize Joe’s significant achievements in leading Anthem and reflects the board’s confidence in Joe’s leadership moving forward as we work to ensure the successful integration of the Cigna business and following the close of the acquisition,” said Mr. Schaefer.
