In a recent editorial, Ms. Buckholtz admits surprise at the delay in implementation of ICD-10 but also says that forestalling the rollout allowed for a more thorough look at what is to come, particularly in regard to four myths in the medical coding industry.
Her four points go as follows:
1. In most cases, the speculated cost is expected to be far greater than the actual cost of implementation.
2. Productivity isn’t likely to take much of a hit, as most coders can learn the new system within a few weeks.
3. Just like in ICD-9, most practices won’t need to mandate the use of external cause codes.
4. Unspecified codes will be important.
