AAP: Do Unspecified Codes Still Have a Place in ICD-10-CM?

While ICD-10 is designed to increase coding specificity, there remains a place for unspecified codes in ICD-10-CM, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.

•    Unspecified codes are still needed to identify encounters

Though certain situations still call for unspecified codes, the AAP urges providers to document as much detail as possible and to eliminate unspecified codes in appropriate situations.
