AAFP welcomes new CMS primary care physician payment model: 5 insights

American Academy of Family Physicians praised CMS’ Comprehensive Primary Care Plus model, according to AAFP.

Here are five insights:

1. Effective in January 2017, CPC+ is a five-year model designed to enhance the delivery of primary care. If primary care outcomes improve, CMS will pay physicians for enhancing care and achieving better results.

2. The initiative is expected to reach about 20 regions and 20,000 physicians.

3. AAFP promotes comprehensive, coordinated and continuous primary care.

4. The organization said new payment models should support primary care physicians’ financial and emotional efforts to restructure their practices.

5. CPC+ includes a blended payment model involving public and private payers.
