86% of physicians are still paid under fee-for-service payment model — 5 takeaways

Deloitte’s “2016 Survey of US Physicians” showed many physicians are reimbursed under a fee-for-service model, rather than a value-based care system in which providers are paid based on outcomes.

In the survey, Deloitte polled 600 U.S. primary care and specialty physicians on their adoption of value-based payment models last year.

Here are five takeaways:

1. In 2016, 86 percent of physicians reported being paid under a fee-for-service model, showing similar rates in 2014.

2. Fifty percent of physicians reported receiving bonuses less than or equal to 10 percent of their compensation, which remained the same from the year prior.

3. Nearly 33 percent of those polled reported being ineligible for performance bonuses.

4. Although 75 percent of physicians reported having clinical protocols, merely 36 percent have access to comprehensive protocols. Of those polled, 20 percent receive data on care costs.

5. Based on the survey findings, Deloitte believes organizations need to follow a series of steps to meeting healthcare’s triple aim — reducing costs, improving health and enhancing the patient experience. These steps include:
•    Tying at least 20 percent of a physician’s compensation to performance goals
•    Give providers the right tools to meet these performance goals
•    Acquire technology that is timely, reliable and actionable
