7 statistics on healthcare consumer payment trends

As more financial responsibility shifts to the patient, what consumers think about healthcare payments become more important. Here are seven statistics on consumer payment trends, according to InstaMed‘s Trends in Healthcare Payments Fifth Annual Report: 2014.

1. Nine out of 10 consumers want to pay their healthcare bills online.

2 .More than half of consumers, 63 percent, did not know they had payment responsibility during a visit.

3. Nearly all of consumers, 90 percent, received healthcare bills via mail.

4. If given the option, 93 percent of consumers would pay their healthcare bills through their provider’s or health plan’s website. On the other hand, 46 percent would pay through their bank’s bill pay portal.

5. Most consumers, 79 percent, want to be able to pay all of their healthcare bills in one place.

6. Nearly half of consumers, 42 percent, were very confused by provider bills.

7. Forty-seven percent of consumers were very confused by their EOB from payers.
