42% of Medicare claims have incorrect codes: 3 things to know

Here are three things to know:

1. Of the claims submitted to Medicare, 42 percent had incorrect codes.

2. Recent estimates find between 75 percent and 80 percent of medical bills consumers receive have inaccurate charges due to medical coding errors.

3. Various states say inaccurate coding is in large part due to EHR features that aim to ease coding complexity. While these features intend to simplify the process, they often lead to coding errors.
