14 states with Medicaid/CHIP beneficiaries above national average

Here are the states with the highest percentage of residents covered by Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program, according to data from the Kaiser Family Foundation.

 

The following 13 states and Washington, D.C, have a higher percentage of Medicaid/CHIP beneficiaries than the national average, at 20 percent.

1. West Virginia: 29 percent
2. New Mexico: 27 percent
3. California: 26 percent
4. Washington, D.C.: 26 percent
5. Arizona: 25 percent
6. New York: 24 percent
7. Oregon: 24 percent
8. Massachusetts: 23 percent
9. Maine: 23 percent
10. Mississippi: 23 percent
11. Arkansas: 22 percent
12. Kentucky: 22 percent
13. Washington: 22 percent
14. Ohio: 21 percent
