‘Sustained Attention’ Crucial for Maintaining Employee Compliance to Vaccination Requirements

Research results suggest that although no one factor is associated with improving healthcare worker influenza vaccination rates, ‘sustained’ management attention can help increase compliance, according to a study published in Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology.

Researchers identified success and failure factors for healthcare employee vaccination at 153 hospitals. Results showed vaccination rates improved from 45 percent of healthcare workers in 2005-2006 to 66.5 percent in 2008-2009, and hospitals with lower complexity had higher vaccination rates. No single factor was associated with vaccination rates, but researchers concluded sustained management attention can improve performance. Similarly, lack of attention could lead to lowered vaccination rates.
