MedStar Health, a nonprofit healthcare organization, implemented a mandatory influenza vaccination program during the 2009-2010 influenza season. Healthcare professionals and affiliated physicians were given an opportunity to apply for medical or religious exemptions. Noncompliant healthcare professionals were terminated, and noncompliant physicians’ privileges were suspended for the influenza season.
Results showed compliance among healthcare professionals improved from 54 percent to 98.5 percent. Only 0.01 percent of healthcare professionals were terminated, and 4 percent of physicians had their privileges suspended during the influenza season.
