Study Links Lower Mortality Rates to Accredited Bariatric Centers

A recent study published in Surgical Endoscopy, co-authored by American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery president-elect Ninh T. Nguyen, MD, FACS, has found that non-accredited bariatric centers had an in-hospital mortality rate of 0.22 percent, while accredited centers had a mortality rate of .06 percent.

The study’s results come in the wake of the recent CMS proposal to discontinue bariatric surgery center accreditation. The ASMBS intends to submit another study in support of accreditation for CMS to review before the final ruling on bariatric center certification is made on Sept. 25.
