The initiative, developed to reduce surgical site infections, major complications and death, launched in South Carolina, in which all hospitals committed to putting the checklist into routine use in their operating rooms by the end of 2013.
The toolkit includes a checklist template and a seven-step guide for implementing the World Health Organization’s safe surgery checklist, including information on:
- Checklist background
- Critical preparation
- Checklist modification and customization
- Testing the checklist
- Engaging surgical team members in the checklist
- Implementation planning
- Sustaining checklist use.
