Peer review: What should your program include?

When conducting peer review, how should your ambulatory surgery center proceed? The following are three necessary elements of a peer review process, according to the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care.

1. Clinical record review. Look for inconsistencies and follow-through in the records.

2. Review against benchmarks. Review doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Compare the candidate for review within the context of organizational benchmarks. Creating a scorecard/dashboard setup can expedite the process.

3. Observation. While this is not a requirement of an AAAHC survey, it’s a good way to see how individual providers interact with staff members.
