The staff at the outpatient surgery center, also known as Specialty Surgery Center, noticed that the disinfection cycle on the machine that cleaned scopes used in colonoscopies and upper-endoscopy procedures was set at one minute instead of the manufacturer-recommended five minutes, according to the report.

The surgery center corrected the problem and notified state authorities and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Both the manufactures of the scopes and the CDC have assured patients that this error is unlikely to have adverse affects, but the surgery center may face fines for the violation.
