Measurable Medical Errors Pricetag: $17.1B in 2008

The annual cost of measurable medical errors clocked in at approximately $17.1 billion in 2008, according to research published in Health Affairs.

According to researchers, pressure ulcers were the most common measurable medical error, followed by postoperative infections and postlaminectomy syndrome. Ten categories of measurable medical errors accounted for more than two-thirds of the total cost of errors. Researchers suggest these errors should be the first targets of prevention efforts.
