The purpose of the National Patient Safety Goals is to implement measureable goals to improve patient safety. The goals cover four areas:

•    Identify patients correctly
•    Use medicines safely
•    Prevent infection
•    Prevent mistakes in surgery

Although the four categories hold the same, each set of goals differs slightly from ambulatory to office-based settings.
