Joint Commission: EHR checklist can improve discharge

An article published in the Joint Commission’s Journal on Quality and Patient Safety examines how checklists in electronic health records can help reduce discharge errors.

The article examines a best practice discharge list developed in 2013 using an EHR. The checklist underwent a four phase trial and includes 15 tasks that allow for automatic insertion.

The EHR checklist was able to:

• Remind surgeons to complete discharge tasks
• Improve confidence
• Increase process efficiency

The data shows a strong checklist can improve important discharge task completion.
