Eight ASCs, Hospitals Find Major Factors of Wrong-Site Surgeries

Eight ambulatory surgical centers and hospitals joined with the Joint Commission Center for Transforming Healthcare to address the factors of wrong-site surgeries, which are estimated to occur 40 times a week based on state data.

Poor communication, distractions in the operating room, timeouts without full participation and problems with scheduling and pre-op/holding processes were some of the leading causes that the hospitals and ASCs said increased the risk of wrong-site surgeries.
