Joe Ollayos: We have a nurse as our infection preventionist leading our ASC’s infection control program, but on the larger issue of risk management we also subscribe to HealthStream, which is an online program that offers educational modules on a variety of issues, including risk management.

We have a large pool of part-time and PRN, or occasional, employees who work limited hours. When they are here they are attending to patients. An online program offered us tremendous flexibility in making the training modules available to staff, including during off-hours.

The modules are available to all our center’s employees, and they are required to complete the modules in a particular time frame and pass a competency test. Generally speaking, there are many online training programs for ASCs to use, but HealthStream not only offers a basic program but also allows us to customize the modules for our facility. So our nurse coordinates and works with HealthStream to include specific things that have to do with particular medication, equipment and procedures.

Since the competency tests are built into the modules, we are also able to simply print out the certificate, which we file away to demonstrate each employee passed the risk management modules satisfactorily.
