Here are the most challenging standards for medication management:
1. Taking action to prevent errors involving the interchange of the medications on its list of look-alike/sound-alike medications, including sample medications.
2. Storing medications according to the manufacturers’ recommendations, including sample medications.
3. Preventing unauthorized individuals from obtaining medications, including sample medications, in accordance with the organization’s policy, law and regulation.
4. Labeling all stored medications and the components used in their preparation with the contents, expiration date, and any applicable warnings. This also applies to sample medications.
5. Removing all expired, damaged, and/or contaminated medications — including sample medications — and storing them separately from medications available for administration.
6. Making emergency medications and their associated supplies readily accessible.
