In this study, 60 anemic patients undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass were given either a prophylactic transfusion, which included two units of erythrocytes transfused one to two days before surgery, or a standard transfusion. The severity of perioperative anemia and the relationships between transfusion, iron levels, and AKI were all measured from both groups.
The study concluded that perioperative anemia and erythrocyte transfusions were lower in the prophylactic transfusion group.
