Purdue researchers identify new pain compound: 5 key notes

West Lafayette, Ind.-based Purdue University researchers identified a pain compound aimed at treating chronic and neuropathic pain.

Here's what you should know.

1. The compound inhibits adenylyl cyclases enzymes responses.

2. The compound differs from opioids because it selectively represses only adenylyl cyclases enzymes. It is the only compound that selectively represses enzymes.

3. Val Watts, PhD, led the researchers responsible for identifying the compound.

4. Researchers tested the compound in a positive trial. Dr. Watts said the team is being held back because of funding troubles.

5. Dr. Watts believes if the compound reaches drug testing phases, the medical community will receive it warmly. The response to-date has been positive.
