Pain physicians are reluctant to prescribe these 14 drugs

Pain specialists avoid using certain pain medications to prevent patients from becoming addicted or experiencing serious side effects, Reader's Digest reports.

Reader's Digest collected input from 10-plus pain physicians across the country. While physicians said they make decisions on a case-by-case basis, here are 14 they're reluctant to prescribe:

1. Fentanyl patches
2. Aspirin
3. Advil
4. Oxycodone
5. Opioids
6. Ambien
7. Lunesta
8. Steroids
9. Topical anti-inflammatories
10. Ketamine
11. Marijuana
12. Aleve
13. Ultram
14. Over-the-counter drugs that can cause medication-overuse headaches if used too frequently
