John Pippin, MD, focused on Ivy League schools when he started investigating the abuse of laboratory animals because of the significant funding the universities receive from the National Institutes of Health. His committee found that the University of Pennsylvania had the worst record for lab animal treatment, followed by Princeton and Yale (a tie), Harvard, Cornell, Brown, Dartmouth and Columbia.
Harvard responded to Dr. Pippin’s report by saying it is committed to the “ethical treatment of animals used in research.”
