Dr. Benzinger worked as a surgeon in Berlin before arriving in the United States in 1950. She started her U.S. medical career running an ambulance service in Port Chester, N.Y., and later trained at hospitals in New York and Ohio, completing residencies in anesthesiology and earning her medical license.
Dr. Benzinger moved to Washington, D.C., around 1960 and taught at Georgetown, Howard and George Washington universities. She joined the D.C. General staff in 1961 as CMO and retired in 1988.
Dr. Benzinger was a member of the D.C. Medical Society and the International Anesthesia Research Society, among others.
