ASA urges Senate Finance Committee working group to include chronic pain in discussions: 4 quick facts

The American Society of Anesthesiologists is encouraging the Senate Finance Committee to include chronic pain in discussions on how to improve care for Medicare patients with chronic conditions, according to an ASA report.

1. The Senate Finance Committee held a hearing called “A Pathway to Improving Care for Medicare Patients with Chronic Conditions.”

2. The committee announced the formation of a bipartisan Chronic Care Working Group, which then issued a letter asking for recommendations.

3. In a comment letter, the ASA laid out the impact chronic pain has on the Medicare program.

4. The ASA also suggested the implementation of the Perioperative Surgical Home as a new model of coordinated care. The PSH is a patient-centered model of delivering health care over the entire course of patient experience.
