Here are five notes:

1. Dr. Philip will serve in the role for one year while sitting on ASA's executive committee, which implements policies adopted by the ASA's house of delegates and board of directors.

2. She is Boston-based Brigham and Women's Hospital's Day Surgery Unit founding director and a Boston-based Harvard Medical School anesthesia professor.

3. Previously, Dr. Philip was ASA vice president for scientific affairs for five years, overseeing ASA's clinical care, subspecialties, publications, education and research sections, as well as the Anesthesiology annual meeting. She was a member of multiple ASA committees.

4. Dr. Philip is on the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research's board of directors and executive committee.

5. She is the American Society for Ambulatory Anesthesia's past president.

"From the opioid crisis and the anesthesia drug shortages that are affecting patient care, to the importance of advocating for physician-led anesthesia care teams, it is critical now more than ever to demonstrate physician anesthesiologists' value and the important role we serve in this challenging and changing health care landscape," Dr. Philip said. "In my new position, I will continue to collaboratively address these issues."
