ASA Applauds Enactment of Oklahoma’s Interventional Pain Management Act

Oklahoma Governor Brad Henry signed into law the “Oklahoma Interventional Pain Management and Treatment Act,” which prohibits non-MD or DO providers from offering or performing interventional pain management, according to a news release from the American Society of Anesthesiologists.

Under the legislation, nurse anesthetists are permitted to “administer a lumbar intra-laminar epidural steroid injection if requested by and under the supervision of a physician and under conditions in which timely on-site consultation by such physician is available,” according to the release. Nurse anesthetists are not permitted to open free-standing pain management facilities without the supervision of a physician.

The ASA commended the Oklahoma Society of Anesthesiologists for their dedication to promoting patient safety, according to the release.
