Anesthesiologists Use Head-Mounted Display for Monitoring Patients During Surgery

A new headset allows anesthesiologists to monitor data about a patient during surgery without taking their eyes off the patient, according to a study in the April issue of Anesthesia & Analgesia, the Journal of the International Anesthesia Research Society.

The head-mounted display was developed by an Australian team of anesthesiologists. It projects data from the patient monitors so that it appears in the anesthesiologist’s line of vision as a red image in front of the anesthesiologist’s right eye, according to a news release. The headset is wirelessly connected to patient monitors, so the anesthesiologist can move around the room.

In tests with six anesthesiologists during operations with 36 patients, anesthesiologists spent more time watching patients and less time looking at the monitoring equipment, according to the release.
