Anesthesiologists have the highest intent to leave their roles out of all physician specialists, with 40.6% expressing interest in leaving their current jobs within the next two years, according to a June 24 report from the American Medical Association.
The AMA collected nearly 18,000 responses from physicians in 43 states and more than 100 health systems for its “Organizational Biopsy.” Across all specialties, 31.9% of physicians said they had a moderate interest in leaving their current jobs within the next two years.
Physician specialists with the lowest intent to leave were dermatologists (19.9%) and infectious disease specialists (23.3%); anesthesiologists had the highest intent, followed by vascular surgeons (40.5%).
To stay in their current roles, physicians expressed needing higher compensation (57.9%) and enhanced workflow efficiencies (46.2%).
With more than 40% of anesthesiologists hoping to leave their roles imminently, this could exacerbate existing shortages. Anesthesiology ranks fifth among specialties projected to face the most severe physician shortages.
