Anesthesiologists are among the highest-paid physicians in the U.S., but the specialty is also facing growing demand and a projected shortage. 

The Clinician Workforce Insights Report from Axuall outlines key data points shaping the field today.

Here are 10 numbers and trends to know:

1. The average annual income for anesthesiologists is $494,000.

2. The average professional experience among anesthesiologists is 24 years.

3. The average tenure at a given facility is 37 months. 

4. The gender distribution within anesthesiology is 72% male, 28% female 

5. The gender breakdown of the anesthesiology patient population is 50% female, 36% male and 14% unknown. 

6. Anesthesiology physicians’ reimbursement breakdown by payer type is 69% commercial and 30% government.

7. Chicago-Naperville-Elgin is one of the fastest-growing U.S. markets for anesthesiology demand.

8. New York-Newark-Jersey City is a key metro area supplying anesthesiologists to other regions.

9. Anesthesiology ranks fifth among specialties projected to face the most severe physician shortages.

10. Clinical pathology, vascular/interventional radiology, ophthalmology and urology are the four specialties expected to experience even greater shortages than anesthesiology.
