Here are five anesthesiologists who have made headlines in the last two weeks:
1. The Washington State Medical Association has inaugurated Bridget Bush, MD, as its president. Dr. Bush is a practicing anesthesiologist at Optum Care Washington in Everett. In addition, serves on the clinical faculty at Washington State University’s Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine. Dr. Bush is past president of the Washington State Society of Anesthesiologists and currently serves as the alternate director for Washington state for the American Society of Anesthesiologists.
2. Anesthesiologist Imelda Muller, MD, has been selected from a pool of more than 8,000 applicants to begin training for future flights to the International Space Station, the moon and eventually, Mars. Dr. Muller is a former undersea medical officer for the U.S. Navy. She earned her medical degree from the University of Vermont in Burlington.
3. Kenneth Haselby, MD, an anesthesiologist in Battle Ground, Ind., has died at age 84. Dr. Haselby earned his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from West Lafayette, Ind.-based Purdue University in 1964. He went on to earn his medical degree at the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, followed by an anesthesia residency.
4. Anesthesiologist Sunny Eappen, MD, president and CEO of University of Vermont Health Network, a Burlington-based integrated health system, will step down, effective Oct. 15. The decision was mutually agreed upon by the hospital’s board of trustees and Dr. Eappen. Steve Leffler, MD, will serve as interim CEO, in addition to his current duties as president and COO of University of Vermont Medical Center, which operates within the UVM Health Network. Dr. Eappen will remain with the health system through December to support the transition.
5. Buffalo, N.Y.-based Kaleida Health has appointed Peter Filocamo, MD, as chief of service for anesthesia. Prior to Kaleida Health, Dr. Filocamo served as an assistant clinical professor of anesthesiology at UCLA, as well as a staff anesthesiologist with Kaiser Permanente and Signature Healthcare.
