4 Statistics About Pain Management in ASCs

Here are four statistics about pain management in ASCs, according to SDI Health.



1. Pain management was among the top five surgical specialties found in singe-specialty ASCs, representing 5 percent of the total single-specialty ASC pool. Pain management followed gastroenterology (27 percent), ophthalmology (22 percent) and plastic surgery (20 percent).

2. Pain management represented the second highest average number of average cases in single-specialty ASCs in 2008 with 4,234; gastroenterology was number one with 5,641 cases.

3. In 2008, pain management accounted for the third highest number of procedures performed at single- and multi-specialty centers with a total of 1,365 annual procedures. It followed gastroenterology (3,744 procedures) and ophthalmology (1,718). Overall, pain management represented 9 percent of the total case volume mix at ASCs.

4. Pain management was the fifth most-reported specialty among single- and multi-specialty ASCs in 2008, occurring in 20 percent of all centers. It followed gastroenterology (34 percent), ophthalmology (30 percent), plastic surgery (29 percent) and orthopedics (21 percent).
