An Oakton, Va.-based physician sentenced to 13 years in prison for illegally prescribing opioids and amphetamines has been ordered to forfeit a $168,000 money judgment, two real properties, and to pay $169,244 in restitution to three victims, the Justice Department said in a Sept. 2 news release.
What happened?
- Between April 2019 and January 2024, David Allingham, former physician and owner of Oakton Primary Care Center, wrote prescriptions for opioids and amphetamines without properly evaluating patients. Office visits cost patients $300 to $500, with an additional $700 charge for a physician’s letter, all paid out of pocket.
- Dr. Allingham frequently renewed opioid prescriptions without physical exams or medical justification, relying only on patient claims. During this period, Virginia pharmacies filled more than 7,300 oxycodone prescriptions from him, totaling over 405,000 pills.
- Many of his patients died of drug overdoses within hours, days or weeks of receiving prescriptions from him.
