Atlanta-based Northside Hospital has partnered with the city of Sandy Springs, Ga. and Avive Solutions to roll out the 4 Minute Community Program, aimed at improving survival rates from sudden cardiac arrest.
The initiative will place 200 Avive Connect AEDs with CPR-trained volunteers across the city, according to an Aug. 6 hospital news release. When 911 is called, nearby volunteers can be dispatched to deliver treatment within minutes. The devices provide real-time instructions, transmit early data to hospitals and help guide treatment before first responders arrive.
Sudden cardiac arrest causes more than 356,000 out-of-hospital cases in the U.S. each year, with nearly 90% fatal, according to the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation. Northside is also supporting the program in Forsyth County, and it could soon serve as a national model, according to the release.
