Here are four lawsuit involving cardiologists or cardiology practices since Jan. 1, 2025, as reported by Becker’s:

1. Norman Wang, MD, a cardiologist, lost a lawsuit he filed against the University of Pittsburgh, UPMC, three physicians and a physicians’ group. The lawsuit sought monetary damages for economic and emotional harm and alleged that Dr. Wang was targeted by his supervisors, the university and the hospital system after publishing an article about diversity, inclusion and equity in cardiology in the Journal of the American Heart Association in March 2020.

2. The Missouri state Court of Appeals for the Eastern District revived a wrongful death lawsuit against two physicians and St. Louis Cardiology Consultants in February. The court reversed the not guilty summary judgement after determining that the plaintiff’s expert testimony was based on opinion more than fact.

3. A lawsuit alleging anticompetitive conduct against cardiologist Ricardo Cigarroa, MD, and Laredo Medical Center was dismissed in late January. Doctors Hospital of Laredo and Laredo Physicians Group filed the suit in October 2021, alleging Dr. Cigarroa conspired with Cigarroa Institute, a cardiology outpatient clinic, and Laredo Medical Center to engage in “anticompetitive and tortious behavior” to block recruitment efforts. The suit claimed Dr. Cigarroa issued threats to Doctors Hospital, Laredo Physicians Group, and prospective interventional cardiologists, leading them to decline job offers.

4. Amy Ahnert, MD, sued Allentown, Pa.-based Lehigh Valley Health Network, alleging she experienced gender discrimination, unequal pay and a hostile work environment after working for the system for 17 years. She alleged in the suit that she was paid substantially less than her male counterparts and was denied benefits.
