Here are four ASC controversies Becker’s has reported on since March 31.
1. Patrick Campbell, a former nurse at North Platte (Neb.) Surgery Center, has been charged with stealing prescription medication from the facility. Mr. Campbell was charged in U.S. District Court with acquiring controlled substances by fraud. In April 2023, Mr. Campbell admitted to his employer that he stole propofol and fentanyl from the facility.
2. The Plastic Surgery Center, a cosmetic ASC operating over 20 locations across New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania has suffered a patient data breach. The facility sent out a notice to patients stating that an unauthorized party gained access to its contracted billing company Nov. 4.
3. A New York federal judge has dismissed a complaint filed by four ASCs against 1199 Service Employees International Union National Benefit Fund. The ASCs were Manalapan Surgery Center, New Horizon Surgical Center, Surgicore of Jersey City and Surgicore Surgical Center, The four ASCs alleged in the breach-of-contract lawsuit that they were out-of-network providers providing ad hoc services through an agreement with SEIU. Before performing procedures, the ASCs alleged that SEIU assured them that the services were authorized and covered. Despite the confirmation, the ASCs allege that they were paid at lower rates than is customary for in-network care.
4. A jury has awarded $20.6 million to former Portland Timbers goalkeeper Jake Gleeson, finding orthopedic surgeon Richard Edelson, MD, violated his duty of care during a 2018 surgery that ended Mr. Gleeson’s professional career.
